It is finally time for us to start presenting our Woodman Speeches! This week in class we have been showing just how hard we have worked on these speeches. I know the expectations have been tough but the challenge has been worth it. There are some amazing speeches and I couldn’t be more proud of these students! This week is our final run through. Next Wednesday is the after school competion right after school at 3:45. Then the in school competition is Wednesday, April 5. It is time to shine fifth grade!!
We are back in the swing of things after Christmas break and even an ice day! I am just going to recap some happenings and things upcoming.
Yesterday, January 20th, was the annual 5th Grade Retreat. The retreat focuses on Respect and Kindness in a fun, safe, friendly way. The students were involved in games that involved a lot of movement in a controlled setting. The goal is to not only show respect to oneself and others, but also advocate for other students who may be a victim in a bullying situation. Ask your student about the boomerangs and the goals they set. Tomorrow Friday, January 27th, the school will have an optional dress down day. The proceeds are to go to the Bethlehem House here in Omaha. Please bring one dollar to help with the charity.
January 20th to February 3rd will be Catholic School Week. During that week there will be a Parent-Child mass at St. Pius X for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade on Thursday, February 2nd at 8:30. You are allowed to come up the the classroom with your sons and daughters to drop off their backpacks, books, and jackets. Then your family can walk down to mass. Please try to have a family member or friend attend with your student so no student is alone. After the mass, you can go to the school cafeteria for juice and doughnuts. There will be some fun activities for your students that week including an Omaha Streetband will perform, a RESPECT group will perform, and a “Partners share fun together” morning with our Kindergarten partners and a noon dismissal.
Happenings in the classroom:
Reading: Back in full Guided Reading swing after finishing our novel study of Red Fern in December. Ask your student about rotations. We do include the basal story from their Reading books for some of the rotations. The work done at the rotation with the teacher is entirely at their reading level. Homework will continue to be read for 20 minutes and log Monday-Thursday every week with some additional work in between. Most work in Guided Reading is done in the classroom.
Writing: It is Woodman of the World time! Each student should have a folder by now filled with tools to help guide them through this process. Most work will be done at school, however you can help your student by asking about the speech, helping with research, or just listening to the speech. Every student has an outline with research pages in their Woodman Folders. A schedule is being sent in Friday folders tomorrow, January 27th. The “BIG’ dates are Feb. 23 rough draft due, March 6th final copy due and will be typed in computer lab, the Week of March 13th speeches will be given in class, the Week of March 21 the after school contest for those who qualify-optional. April 5th is the in school contest. After that is districts and SPSL will send 2 representatives. I am extremely hopeful and confident it will be a FIFTH GRADER!
Grammar: Homework will be sent home 1-2 times a week for Grammar out of the book. That work will be done entirely at home so please help your student with that. Check the homework blog online everyday for homework assignments.
Also, a congrats must be sent out to Delaney O’Doherty and Scarlett Wharton for making it to the finals of our school’s spelling bee. Delaney and Scarlett will be competing on February 1st to qualify for the Omaha Metros Spelling Bee finals. GO 5C GIRLS!
