COVID-19 message from Principal Sepich on April 2, 2020

Hello SPSL Families,

I hope you are all well and continue to stay healthy and safe. I am continuing to keep you all in my prayers and thank you for praying for all of your teachers and staff here at SPSL. I am continually blown away by all of your kindness and generous spirits these past few weeks. It means so much to not only myself but our teachers too!

I know you have received a lot of emails the past few weeks, so on my end, I have been trying to consolidate the information I am sending out into one email. I apologize for the length of this email and the quantity of information but that is because I am trying to keep all of this information in one place. Thank you for your patience.

Attached to this email is a press release from the Superintendent of Omaha Catholic Schools, Dr. Michael Ashton. In the press release, Dr. Ashton states that under the advisement of Governor Ricketts, Commissioner Blomstedt (Nebraska Department of Education) and State Epidemiologist Dr. Gary Anthone, all schools in Nebraska will be continuing with distance learning for the rest of the school year, including St. Pius X / St. Leo School. I know that this news comes as no surprise to many, as other schools in our area have made this announcement, but it still is so sad for me to have to communicate this to our school community as we miss our students and families a great deal. As Dr. Ashton also alludes to in the email, there are going to be a lot of questions about how this affects things like graduation and other end-of-the-year happenings. I promise to address those questions as we continue to move forward with our distance learning plan and communicate those to you all accordingly.

In the meantime, please see our “COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions” document under our “Daily Announcements”(link) page on the school website. There are two new additions to that document on the questions of how Easter Break and other inservice days will look under our DLP as well as community resources.

Lastly, over the past few weeks, both our Omaha area Catholic and public schools have been utilizing online meeting tools like Zoom, Google Hangout and Flipgrid amongst many other video conferencing resources. At the same time, local and national schools have encountered some issues with these online resources and we felt it was best to have guidelines and a plan in place for how we here at SPSL conduct online meetings and video conferencing. Attached to this email is our “SPSL Video Guidelines” for faculty and families. Please read through this attachment as we feel it is very important to our school community’s collective safety and wellbeing.

Additionally, in this email, we have included an “Online Video Permission Form” that parents must fill out for each student in the family and submit to us no later than this Sunday, April 5th.  Parents must fill out the form and hit submit for each student that attends SPSL for teachers to be able to communicate with our families with these online video tools.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this email and the attachments. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all navigate this together and your support for our teachers and staff. It is natural for us all to grieve the loss of our regular, normal school year and traditions. Right now, I know leadership is very important and we hope to continue to do our best at this time to continue to live out the SPSL mission and attend to the well-being of our community members. The only thing I can promise you in this very moment is that we will get some things right and some things wrong. I do know that our goal is to get more things right than we do wrong and to deliver and accept grace to our wonderful school community in the process.

Peace and blessings,

Cory Sepich
