1B has been having so much fun in small groups, working together, and using our curiosity to learn! This past month we laid the foundation for successful small group rotations, Writers’ Workshop, transitioning in the hallways, and how to use free time in 1st grade when an assignment is complete.

In the coming weeks, we will be working on:

Math- addition and subtraction

Literacy- short vowels, informational texts, writing first, next, then, and last to retell stories

Science- health and space

Social Studies- how to be a good citizen

Writers’ Workshop- capitalization, punctuation, commas, and illustrating stories

We can’t wait for October!

1B had such a great week! The highlight of our week was opening up literacy centers to begin reading groups and beginning writers workshop. We also worked on our Eric Carle author study. I am so excited to see the students really take off with their learning this quarter!

• We are sending home word lists in the Friday Folders- please practice the sight words with your child!
• We had our first spelling test! We will be looking at handwriting and also spelling- if a letters are backwards that is OK and developmentally appropriate 
• Fr. Craig visits have started, he comes to our room every Wednesday

• The volunteer form was sent home Thursday and needs to be returned Wednesday, September 13 (make sure you have completed the safe environment training in order to attend!)

What a first week! 1B has been practicing routines, schedules, and becoming comfortable in their new classroom. With all this change and the heat wave- they have done an outstanding job!

Welcome to 1B!

I’m Maureen Williams, your child’s teacher. This year we will spend our days learning through math games, reading and writing. At Pius we are fortunate to have 3 First Grade classrooms as well as two TA’s, Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Baldwin.

Some things to remember for this year:

-please make sure your child has everything labeled, including sweatshirts and water bottles

-your child will send home a GO folder everyday, please return daily

-we will also have a Friday Folder. This contains the work we’ve completed throughout the week

-light homework will be sent home this year, please work with your child when they do bring homework home (spelling lists, math fact)

-a sign up genius will be sent out at a later date for volunteer opportunities

-we do a Star Student of the week; when it’s your child’s turn you will receive instructions

-For birthday’s you may bring in a nut free treat to share with the class
