Hello from your Religion teacher!  I’m excited to be back at SPSL where all are welcome and all belong. We will spend the first week or so getting to know each other and the routines so as far as Religion goes – fun and exciting, with low pressure! After that we’ll focus on the Old Testament, liturgy, and God’s promise of unconditional love. What beautiful discoveries await us!

Advent has been full of learning and preparing the way for our King.

In Math, we have been collecting, organizing, analyzing, and presenting data.  The kids have had fun working with statistics, but mean, median, and mode are surely a challenge!

In Religion, we have grown in our understanding of the Pentateuch, the great Patriarchs and Matriarchs of the first five books of the Bible.  Once the new year begins, we will venture forward into Joshua, Judges, Ruth, and then the stories of King David.  Meanwhile, we spend afternoons on Fridays or Mondays adoring Jesus in Eucharistic exposition.  Parents are always welcome to join in this prayer time (1-3pm Mondays or Fridays).

Thank you so much for sending such thoughtful, hard working, respectful students to my classroom. It has been a joy to be their teacher this school year.  May God bless your Christmas!

More News:

In Religion, we enjoyed the movie, Fatima.  Mary’s message to the three children in Portugal was: Pray the Rosary!  What a beautiful and powerful reminder of Mary’s love for us, especially while in October, the Month of the Rosary.

In Math, we are working our way around fractions.  We create equivalent fractions, execute all operations on mixed numbers, and even dabble in the skill of estimation.  Ask your Mod 3 Advanced Math student to figure out the tip on your next restaurant outing!

Oh, what an exciting time!  Our 6th grade team has been anticipating your arrival, and are enthused to meet you!

Here are some helpful guidelines for starting the year with confidence:

1. We will spend the first week simply getting to know each other and the routines of sixth grade, without any pressure.  This time should be exciting but relaxed.  We’re in this new year together!
2. Math homework will always be uploaded to Google Classroom on Monday morning of each week.  You’ll get your classroom code the first week of school. I use Google Classroom dependably, and it’s there to support you.

Thank you to our outstanding parents for making Valentine’s Day super *sweet*!  We loved our games and goodies and just having an excuse to relax on a dark winter day!

Mod 8 Math:  Geometry is a new enterprise for us!  The students are mastering angles, angle relationships, and defining different classifications of polygons.  Soon we will be able to solve perimeter and area of 2D figures using formulas.  Look for their Lions of Symmetry soon!  Beautiful works of art these kids will create!

Mod 9 Math:  Algebra!  Yes, we are solving for “x”!  We are using inverse operations to isolate the variable.  We are combining like terms and resurrecting our distribution property.  I am so proud of these kids for their hard work enacting the steps to perform Algebraic tasks!

Welcome to 2023!

Mod 8: Advanced Math

We are continuing our grueling work with proportions by expanding into percents!  We will learn how to navigate smoothly from decimals to fractions to percents and back again.  We will learn how to survive in this market economy by estimating and solving for costs and discounts and tax rates.  Hopefully the kids will be savvy purchasers and budget managers in no time!

Mod 9 & 10:

We are leaving Statistics behind, and wandering into the wild world of integers!  What are they?  What are the rules for adding/subtracting them, and then for multiplying/dividing them?  Can we integrate our earlier lessons on order of operations now that we use integers in our math work?  Big questions, and soon the answers should all be “I can show you!”

6B enjoyed root beer floats during study hall today to celebrate reaching their 2nd level of ROAR rewards for our homeroom.

Way to go!

Mod 8:  We just completed our Algebra introduction: one- and two-step equations, as well as inequalities!  Our Mod 8 attitude is playful, curious, and hard-working.  I am so proud of their audacious enthusiasm with all math challenges!  Now on to….ratios, proportions, and percents!  

Mods 9 & 10:  These two classes scored the highest average grades of the entire year!  I’m so proud of them!  Their topic was multiplication and division of mixed numbers, not an easy study!  Fearlessly we move on to Statistics!  What is data?  How should we best organize and present it?  What manner of analysis are we able to engage?  Lots of fun questions ahead for us to probe and observe!

Our 6th Grade Math Motto:  Math is Fair!  

Mod 8:  Integers: our new number classification.  We are learning to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers!  Sometimes we sing, sometimes we shuffle poker chips, and sometimes we execute movement on a number line.  Ask your 6th grader which is the favorite!

Mod 9 & 10:  Congratulations to these math warriors on the detailed work of multiplying and dividing with decimals!  Ask your student: Who is the divisor in the class? Where does the divisor sit in a division problem? And, how can we change numbers as long as we are fair?  What does that even mean?  The kids know!

Please continue to check Google Classroom for daily assignments and learning goals, as needed.  The week is laid out for all students every Monday morning at 8 am on Google Classroom.
