Daily schedule

All 6th grade students have a homeroom teacher, but this is the first year they will go to a different teacher for each subject.  Students will meet in their homeroom each morning and then move from classroom to classroom, depending on their daily schedule.

Curriculum / Learning Goals

ENGLISH

In English, students will continue to develop their knowledge of the parts of the sentence, punctuation, grammar, and figurative language. They will then put these skills to use as they explore each of the four types of writing: expository, persuasive, descriptive, and narrative. A main focus will be to engage our students in cross-curricular projects in order to assist them in developing lifelong skills necessary to communicate effectively in our world.

LITERATURE

The 6th grade literature program encompasses both Guided Reading as well as whole-group instruction. The small-group format of Guided Reading offers students more individualized instruction that focuses on specific needs, allowing for greater progress. Our goal is to develop students’ enjoyment of literature as they learn to analyze a variety of literary genre according to plot, setting, character, and theme. Projects will focus on cross-curricular activities.

MATH

Students will focus on working with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. They will also be working with integers, ratios, percents, proportions, and geometry. In addition, students will practice several problem-solving strategies throughout the year. Each student will also be expected to maintain a math notebook, which will organize all classroom notes and examples.

RELIGION

The 6th grade focuses on Old Testament Scripture. The study of our faith ancestors provides an example for the students’ lives as well as providing an understanding of our Judeo-Christian heritage. The students learn of our Church calendar, the stories of the prophets and saints, and come to recognize how our valuable traditions influence our rituals and the way we choose to live our lives.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students learn about several ancient civilizations throughout the first semester These include: The First People, Egypt, Greece, China, and India. Second semester’s emphasis is on Rome, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Industrial Revolution.

SCIENCE

Science in the 6th grade focuses on inquiry skills and hands-on learning. We will explore the Scientific Method and apply it to real-life experiences in Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, and Earth and Space Science.

SPANISH

The study of oral language is more intense than in the K-5 curriculum. Studies include: colors, numbers, greetings, days of the week, months, etc., culture, social studies, music, and prayers.

SPEECH AND DRAMA

New for the 2023-24, all 5th and 6th graders will take Speech and Drama. Students will see Mrs. Martinez once a week for this special. Learn more here: spsl.net/classroom/speech-drama/

The grading scale for 6th grade is as follows:

A+  =  99, 100
A  =  95-98
A-  =  93, 94
B+  =  91, 92
B  =  89, 90
B-  =  87, 88
C+  =  85, 86
C  =  79 – 84
C-  =  77, 78
D+  =  75, 76
D  =  74, 73, 72
D-  =  71, 70
F  =  69 and below

Homework

Students are required to write their assignments down in their assignment notebook.

Mass / Reconciliation

Sixth grade attends Mass every week on Thursday.  You are welcome to attend. Please check the monthly calendar for dates. All of the 6th grade students will participate in Reconciliation once a year.

Friday Folders

Friday Folders are sent home every other week.  Information is also sent home via email by the homeroom teacher or the grade coordinator if the info is for the whole grade.  Information can also be found on Daily Announcements via the website.

Discipline System

We use a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) approach to discipline.  Students carry around a card that can be marked for undesirable behaviors that do not follow the ideas of Ready to learn, Offer respect, Achieve a safe environment, and Responsibility for self or others.  Students earn positive marks for meeting or exceeding school expectations.

Birthday Treats and Party Invitations

Students may bring a treat to school for their classmates to enjoy on or close to their birthday.  Please make sure the treats are peanut and tree nut free.  Please provide napkins or necessary utensils for the treat to make it quick and easy to serve at school.  Students are not allowed to pass out invitations in school.
