Look at our little saints! I am so proud of the students in 3B. Their saint presentations were amazing! It took tremendous courage to stand up in front of a large group of people and speak into a microphone. The boys and girls felt very proud of themselves and loved telling parents, grandparents, and siblings all about the heroic saints.

3B Newsletter Edition 7
Good evening,
Some awesome things have happened this week and some less desirable things too. The great things include: earning a chance to watch a short movie and a snack, having an extended time to silently read today, think about people we are grateful for, earning candy, receiving some compliments from other teachers, and having more work turned in than last week. As was mentioned in an email on Wednesday, we are starting to hold students more accountable for the choices they make. They are being rewarded both individually and as a class for making good choices, however also receiving slips for poor choices and being given time to reflect. Several students (not all) received slips this week as we are trying to give them a visual representation of the reminders they received. All of third grade is encouraging leaders and role models to set an example. I believe each of my students is capable of it, I believe in them! Thank you for your prayers. You are all in mine!
Stay happy healthy and holy,

See you there!

Happy Friday!
What marvelous weather we had on Easter weekend! It was a perfect way to rejoice in our savior. I enjoyed talking about my holy week experiences with my class since my fiancé just entered the catholic church at the Easter Vigil service. Even as his sponsor it was such a beautiful experience!
We began reading Because of Winn Dixie this week which has been so much fun. All of the bears that were brought for art today were perfect and will look great hanging in the hall. Also, we’ve hit the ground running with division. The students who know their multiplication well are doing a great job with division! We will begin taking math facts tests for division next week.
God bless you and have a great weekend!

Happy Easter to you and your family!
I had the joy of praying with my students over each of the stations of the cross this afternoon in our church. Each student was given a part to pray aloud and it was a beautiful event being in a holy space together, recognizing the suffering of Jesus.
It’s unbelievable we are already in 4th quarter. Throughout this last quarter of school we will be reading chapter books for reading. We finished The Mouse and the Motorcycle this week and when we return next Tuesday we will begin Because of Winn Dixie. It’s a favorite of mine and students usually love it too!

Good afternoon,
We’ve made it this far into March with sunshine and warmer temperatures so I think spring is here to stay! From talking with the class during our live learning sessions this week it sounds like everyone had some pretty fun spring break adventures, both close to home and far away. I too enjoyed some time to relax and can gather families will be happy to send their kids back to school so parents get a break too. Next week we will be doing our math unit over money. If you are able, please send some coins with your child to school in a ziplock bag with their name and 10 pennies, 5 nickels, 5 dimes and 4 quarters.
Also, students should bring back all of their work and supplies from remote learning. Both paper worksheets and online assignments from google classroom, ixl and xtramath need to be completed and turned in (if applicable) on Monday morning. Any work not turned in completed on Monday, March 22nd (both on paper and on google classroom) will result in a grade of 50%. All 3B students know of this expectation. Please email me if you have any questions.
Stay happy, healthy and holy!

Good afternoon,
Let spring break begin! We had several tests today and definitely deserve a break. One of our tests was a math test over data. When we have those long math tests I usually read the test aloud to the class and help them set up problems. Other than tests, we wrote wanted posters for a leprechaun that was caught snooping around. Some students are offering a generous reward for his capture. Good luck! I pray that you all have a safe, fun, and healthy break! If any problems or questions come up during remote learning please email me at: [email protected].

Good evening,
We rid the 3rd grade halls of all winter art and writing projects, and are hoping March will bring us some spring-like weather! Amazingly we just get that. The weather was clear enough in 3B yesterday as we “lassoed” some main ideas and details around the room. We’ve got some mighty fine cowboys and cowgirls in our class! The Durham museum presented a live stream presentation about Harriet Tubman that fascinated us with a one-woman show depicting Harriet’s life. Next week will be our last days together until we return in person on Monday, March 22nd. All classroom materials for remote learning will go home on Friday the 5th.

Good evening,
We’ve been blessed this week with a few recesses outdoors! The fresh air has done us some good. We remind the students to bring all their winter gear from home to help keep them warm. Today we talked about why snow is white and made snowflakes. 3B also enjoyed the 20 min of free time we earned from our marble jar! I have a quick update on our remote learning week (March. 16th-19th). Third grade will be doing 1 live google meets lesson each day from 10:00-11:00am. This will include math, a break and a language arts lesson. The idea behind this is to help any parents who are working from home and would benefit having the afternoon free to work. Good afternoon,
Happy Valentine’s Day! It may be chilly outside, but our hearts are warm. Our classroom celebration was a little different than normal, but we still enjoyed passing out candy, making our valentines sloth art, and eating snacks. We will continue reading Leah’s Pony next week and learning about the Dust Bowl. We will also have another multiplication test. This is a big topic for third graders so we’ve been spending a lot of time on it. Practicing flashcards at home and completing xtramath/ixl assignments has really helped many students. Good afternoon,
Let’s celebrate our Catholic Schools! In 3B we’ve been praying daily for our schools, religious personnel and all of us to grow closer to Jesus daily. We also pray for our families. Our morning prayer every day for the rest of the year is the Apostle’s Creed. The archdiocese requires that by the end of the year every third grader can recite the prayer by memory. I usually have students individually read it to me sometime between mid-April and the beginning of May. We read the prayer in the morning, but if you want a jump start on helping your child memorize it there is a copy posted on google classroom.
Our classroom will pass out valentines on Monday. If your child did not bring them to school this week they must do so on Monday. I will staple the bags and set them aside after that so no valentines will be permitted to be passed out after that date. The bags will go home with students on Thursday (a half day).
This cold weather seems to be here to stay for a while. Indoor recess is something we have been getting used too. If you have extra things laying around the house that you think make great art supplies, we will take them. Things like: paper towel rolls, tissue paper, pipe cleaners, string etc.
Next Week we will have ixl assignments on Monday and Wednesday instead of Monday and Thursday. Those assignments are listed below.
If I am having a parent-teacher conference with you next Thursday, I will send you a separate email after this one to confirm your time.

Good afternoon,
What a week! The snow we had was very timely because we began a writing piece on snowmen. Did you know that some snowmen play dodgeball and go sledding at night while you’re asleep. I love reading creative writing my students make. With only having 3 days this week we will continue working on the same reading story and spelling words next week. Parent teacher conference forms are due to me by next Wednesday. Thank you for sending those. We are thrilled to celebrate Catholic schools week next week with some special activities. Monday will be an optional dress down day. If your child chooses to dress down we ask that they bring $1 or more that will be donated to a Catholic charity. We are so blessed!

Good afternoon,
Do you know why mosquitoes buzz in people’s ears? Just ask your third grader and they could tell you all about it! That’s the story we read this week and it will surely make you curious. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave us lots to discuss during social studies this week as well as respecting life. We are also making good progress in using multiplication. There was some confusion over what the homework assignments were this week, I have already posted the IXL assignments your child will need as well as listed them in this email. On Tuesday we will take the STAR Math test. A letter was sent home with all youngest and only students today regarding intent to enroll at SPSL next year. The office staff would like that returned by Wednesday, January 27th. I’d like to say thank you to those who donated paper, clorox wipes and other supplies to our classroom and school. It helps us a ton! If you want to donate extra supplies to 3rd grade we are in need of: clorox wipes, bottled water, soap, and paper towels.

Good evening!
This week though short was full of learning and a little fun. We were all very tired by the end of the day. We played a game of “baseball” to review for our reading test today over Centerfield Ballhawk. Next week we will have several tests due to the upcoming Christmas break. I think everyone is giddy with excitement for that!
This week I’ve spent a lot of time going through the work turned in from remote learning. I had several students who did all of the work and I am so appreciative of that! It shows that your child can be responsible, keep track of their assignments, and try their best. Thank you for guiding them in this. I feel like it was a much more successful remote learning experience than the Spring. I did, however, have some students complete little or no work. If that was the case I’ve been trying my best to make sure they are finishing it, yet there is only so much time in the day. If your child is still missing work (that I know of) I will email you. Any work that I am grading that was not completed will show up in the gradebook as a 50%. If the student completes the work and turns it into me within a week after the remote week I will raise their grade. As I mentioned I got to most students that just missed a couple of things but If I know of more I will tell you. This work would be due on Tuesday, December, 15th. This same policy will apply during the week after Christmas. We might have a bit of a winter wonderland this weekend. I hope it puts us all in the Christmas spirit!

The First Week of Remote is Complete!
Good afternoon!
I think we all need to celebrate tonight! We are officially done with our first week of remote learning. This week was a great trial for after Christmas break. Thank you all for helping your students stay organized, complete assignments, and attend the twice daily live classes. Some things I felt that went well was that most students showed up to live meets on time, participated in the lessons by writing things down and volunteering answers, improving at muting and muting the microphones. Some things to think about for our next remote period would be to make sure everyone completes the daily check-in form by 10am, reduce background noise and distractions during live meets, and make sure everyone completes assignments. I am missing assignments from some students and they may already have completed their work and just need to click “turn in” or “submit” Overall it seemed to be a smoother transition than last year. I hope you all feel the same! Next week we will be back in the classroom and it will be great to see everyone. Please have your student bring back all of their school supplies which would include: binder, black folder, reading book, bag of writing utensils.
Stay happy, healthy and holy!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Good afternoon!
It was great to be back at school this week, especially because we won’t be together again for a while. Thanksgiving was definitely the theme for this week as we are all excited for a break, time for yummy food and celebrating in whatever way we can. Some pretty funny turkey stories left this room today and some colorful kites. I’m sure many of you, like me, are grateful we have been in school this long! I will send a more detailed email about our week of distance learning after this one. We will be doing two live meetings each day from 10:30-11:00 and 1:00-1:30. Work is also assigned both on paper in their binders and online. Thanksgiving gives us a chance to reflect and relax. While there’s a lot of hard things happening, I think there are some great things going on too. Watching my students grow as learners and in height (I think some grew a couple inches during my time away:) makes me smile. Thank you for all that you are doing as parents this year to make it through extra obstacles. I appreciate your resilience! Have a Happy Thanksgiving, may it be joyous and restful!

Hello everyone,
My prayers have been with all of you that you are healthy and are doing as well as can be with the state of things right now. While being away from school for a week and a half I’ve spent my time doing some school prep but also doing some wedding prep. Like me I’m sure you’ve been learning the importance of patience, flexibility, understanding, peace and trusting the Lord our God in everything you do. At the time I am writing this email I am still awaiting my Covid test results from yesterday morning, but I am still hoping they still come back negative. I am excitedly planning my return for this Monday the 16th. If that is no longer possible I will let you know. I am so grateful for Mrs. Worthy filling in for me in my absence and trust my students enjoyed her being there. As you’ve already read from an email sent out from the school yesterday, we will no longer have school the week of Thanksgiving. The week after, however, will be a virtual learning week. I plan to talk to my class this coming week more about that and will be sending some things home with them on Friday to use. I will be carefully monitoring students that are not doing their homework this week in an effort to reach out to you in case you are having difficulties accessing the assignments. If an assignment is not submitted by 9pm each night I will be sending you an email. I want everyone to be as prepared as possible for that week of distance learning. I may also send an extra email throughout the week if there is something you need to know. Thank you for the prayers you have said for myself, my fiance and my roommate, God’s love will get us through anything!
Have a restful weekend!

Happy Halloween!
We celebrated Halloween all week long by reading some fun holiday themed books, art projects to go with each book and some movies too. We talked about how the Holy Trinity is like a piece of candy corn-3 persons in 1. I was quite impressed with the prayers students wrote and what everyone wrote about how they are trying to become a Saint. You can’t have Halloween without candy, so we played bingo with Smarties as the game pieces and enjoyed some snacks at the end of the day. We will get back to a more normal schedule next week when school resumes on Tuesday, November 3rd. We will now have the opportunity to livestream the masses and watch them on Wednesdays. This is so exciting as mass is so important to our Catholic school! Third grade will get to be a part of the mass on Wednesday, November 11th. Those masses can be found on the Saint Pius the Tenth Catholic Church Youtube page.
Have a safe and fun week/early weekend!

Good afternoon!
I want to say a huge thank you to everyone I have conferenced with so far and those couple yet to go. I appreciate connecting with all of you and keeping our spirits high this year despite the fact I think we are all ready for the chaos of 2020 to end. A few highlights from this week were that we had a zoom presentation from Nebraska Agriculture in the Classroom. They related to our science topic of animal traits and discussed different types of chickens and the traits that farmers look for. We also wrote acrostic poems for halloween and turned them into a piece of art. They turned out pretty neat!
The Friday folders should have had almost all work included now. In the past if a student didn’t do so well on a paper I might have them fix it and I would improve their grade up to an 80%. I will continue to fix papers with students from time to time if I feel after practice they still aren’t grasping a skill or I might send it home for them to correct, but I will no longer raise the grade as I want a truer representation of each student’s work.
There will not be a spelling or reading test next week nor will we have school Thursday, Friday or Monday.
Stay warm this weekend and thanks again!

Good afternoon!
Today officially marks the end of the First Quarter! I’m so excited that we’ve been able to be in school this whole time, I hope the class is too! With that said, I have booked several parent teacher conferences next week. Thank you to everyone who returned their forms. I will be sending an email with your time and date and a google meets link if applicable to you. We only have 10-15 min time slots as I have some back to back conferences. In addition, two days before your conference I will email you a document with notes I plan to discuss during the conference so that you have a chance to look them over beforehand if you would like. You won’t see many papers in Friday folders due to the short week and my wanting to hold onto the tests to discuss during your conference. Many of us struggled with regrouping 3 digit numbers today so if your child has any time to practice this weekend it will make next week easier as we move into subtracting 4 digit numbers and across zeros. In third grade we’ve noticed some writing in the girls bathroom stalls about 3 times so far this year and today we had a talk about disrespecting property. We hope no one does that again. We want to respect the place we spend so much time!
Thank you for your support during this first quarter!

Good afternoon!
The afternoon was quite relaxing today in 3B! We jumped into our Friendzy workbooks for the first time today and our theme for this unit is “We Need Each Other.” We talked about how to encourage one another and be on the same team. Our fall landscape art was finished up today after painting. It was the perfect ending since our morning was full of tests.
I sent home a couple of Scholastic book order forms today in case your family is interested. If you decide to place an order you will need our class code: RX9VT. This will work whether you place an order online or via the order form. (If you ever place an order outside of the due date please let me know so I can log in to my Scholastic page and submit it, otherwise it won’t process.) I’d like orders to be in by Wednesday the 14th, the same day conference forms are due. Thank you for filling those out, I look forward to communicating with you about your child’s progress! Let me know if you have any questions!
Next week there is no school on Monday due to a staff development day. I’ll see everyone on Tuesday!

Good afternoon!
It’s tough coming back after a week off but 3B got to be outside 4 times today, a nice way to still enjoy some pleasurable weather in October! We began drawing fall landscapes in art today and they are looking fabulous! The olympics was a major topic of the week. I think we are all excited to watch the next olympic games. We are also keeping a close eye on the soybean seeds we are trying to grow, hoping for a sprout to appear.
At the end of the day at least 2-3 days a week we have silent reading time. This is a time where students need to bring a book from home or go to the library page on the SPSL website to order a book. This is an important part of our day and a nice time to relax while still learning several skills. If you have a chance to check with your child to see if they have a book at school this would help them not miss out!
It’s been a big transition this year to eat in our classrooms. The school lunches are free right now and many are participating, some students seem to be throwing a lot in the trash and it’s sad to see so much food wasted. Everyone is still welcome to bring a cold lunch if they don’t like the food being served that day.
The amount of homework being completed has gotten less and less each day/week that has gone by. My class and I talked about why I assign homework and its importance of reviewing what we learn in class to help them remember and be able to work faster at the skill. Taking responsibility for doing your homework is important. If you have questions about homework I’d be happy to answer them!
Thank you for encouraging your learners! Have a restful weekend.

This week certainly flew by! We finished up Nate the Great and most of the tests looked really good after having had the story for 2 weeks. We also began discussing adjectives, and with the start of fall it was fun to describe the season in all its glory! My hope is we can indulge our weekend and come back refreshed on Monday. There is no school tomorrow. Enjoy your night and stay healthy!

Good afternoon!
Happy Friday! We’ve been super sleuths this week being detectives like Nate the Great. We used clues to identify a number, located clues in a Time for Kids magazine to understand words we don’t know and completed a word search. I’ve found how important it is to help students learn skills to do independently. Third grade is a year I am encouraging them to problem solve and think for themselves when faced with unknowns with some help along the way. Thanks for encouraging this at home!
We will continue with the same spelling word list as this week. Our spelling and reading test for Nate the Great will be on Thursday. Your child takes home their spelling list on the first day of each school week, so they should have taken one home on Monday.
I discussed with students today about my expectations for completing homework and specified some important information about ixl. As a third grader, student’s should be doing about 30 min. of homework a night. My rule for ixl is students should work until they reach a smart score of 80 or have worked for 30 min. A student may choose to go beyond that if they choose. If you have questions about homework please let me know and I will follow up with you.
Enjoy your evening,
Miss Langenfeld

Good afternoon!
How were math and reading related this week? Basketball! Our reading story was about a girl who played basketball so we carried that into math today. We looked up stats for the Creighton Bluejays, wrote down one of the numbers to round to the nearest ten and tried to make a basket! We had a lot of tests and quizzes this week but next week we will only have the Star Math test and an English test. Our next reading story is longer so it will take us 2 weeks. We will not have a spelling or reading test next week, but we will on Thursday the 24th.
Our numbers are going up for online homework participation, thank you parents! If you have any troubles logging in please reach out. We are using google classroom, xtramath, and ixl each week now. I will not be sending out daily homework emails next week but the schedule is in the front of everyone’s black folder and the passwords are in the back. If you are having difficulties gaining access to technology please let me know so I can see how SPSL can help. For ixl I would like to see each student reach a smart score of at least 80 but they may keep working to get above that. A smart score of 80 is proficient. If ixl is the homework for the night their goal for now is 80 or however far they get in 30 min time. Students should only spend about 30 minutes each night on homework.
It’s been pretty rainy at recess so it’s been fun seeing everyone’s raincoats! The school library is still available for renting books. You can visit the library page on the school website to order a book. We try to have a silent reading period at the end of the day when possible during the week.
Enjoy your evening,
Miss Langenfeld

Good afternoon!
For a short week, we were pretty busy in 3B. It’s amazing how well we are adapting to our new normal back here at school! I hope all of you have a restful Labor Day weekend! A couple reminders include: having your child bring a book from home to read during silent reading time as well as an old sock to use as a dry erase board eraser. Mrs. Vogel has worked hard to get the library up and running. While we won’t have class in the library this year students can use the SPSL online book catalog to order books from home that can be delivered to their homeroom. I have attached a video on how to do that. Lastly, If you have limited access to technology at home please let me know. If you need any help logging in to student accounts that information is in the back of their black folder.
Enjoy your evening,

Good afternoon!
I think everyone needs to celebrate tonight after making it through our first full week of school in nearly 5 ½ months! I am so appreciative to you all for having your children as prepared as possible for beginning school again. Easy is not the word anyone would use to describe that process but you’ve done it. This is the first of my weekly newsletters that I typically send out at the end of the school week. They usually mention the topics covered for the week and any reminders you may need about things coming up. Next Tuesday after school an email will be sent out with a slideshow about third grade. This is in lieu of a parent meeting this year. At the end will be a link to fill out a form saying you viewed the information and acts as your “attendance” to the meeting. Please reach out to me if you have any questions: [email protected]

Third Graders,
I am excited to welcome you to third grade! We will begin getting into a routine as we head into our full week schedule. We will have specials classes each day as well as lunch and 2 recesses. Don’t forget to take home and bring back your black folder each day as well as a few other items: masks, towel, filled water bottle and your lunch if you are bringing it from home. I’m thrilled to have you in my class this year!
Miss Langenfeld
Hello! Welcome to 3B. I am so happy to be returning to St. Pius X / St. Leo School as a third grade teacher. I have been an educator in the Catholic schools for 30 years. I am blessed with two sons. My older son is a junior at Millard North. The younger one is a sophomore at Creighton Prep. In addition to teaching, I love hiking, biking, kayaking, taking long walks with my dogs, and doing just about anything with my teenage boys. I can't wait to get to know you! We are going to have a terrific year together.
